Accidents happen from time to time. You have a slip or fall, your child takes a dive off of the swing set or skateboard. Or you suffer a blow to the mouth while playing sports. Or you take a bite of something and notice you have lost a filling, crown, or even part of a tooth. Dental emergencies do happen, which is why you should have a dental first aid kit. But what should you include?

A toothbrush, toothpick or dental floss may help dislodge something that is stuck between your teeth. If you lose a tooth, you can use a tooth preserving solution to keep it alive until you can get in to see our dentist, Dr. Rick Jackomis. Salt can be dissolved in water used to rinse your mouth, and can also help alleviate any discomfort. Hydrogen peroxide is also useful for cleaning your injury.

Dental injuries can be painful. Aspirin, ibuprofen, or a topical pain reliever can help with any discomfort. Clove oil is also useful for pain management. A cold pack can serve two purposes. It can help bring down any swelling, and relieve pain. If you are experiencing bleeding from your injury, sterile gauze or a moist tea bag can control it.

Dental wax can cover a chipped tooth or a broken wire from your braces. A lost filling can be replaced with a temporary filling material which is available in drug and retail stores. If a crown falls off, you may be able to slide it back on with the help of some Vaseline and hold it in place for the time being with dental cement.
